Jiggler provides a simple and flexible interface for defining representations for your JavaScript objects. This allows for separating the concern of how models are used and stored in your application layer with how they are presented to endpoints such as REST API clients.
Jiggler is framework agnostic and works with any object oriented approach to model declaration. We use it in production at Heyride for serializing all of our REST API responses which are derived from Mongoose objects.
It is loosely based on the ruby acts_as_api gem and node-swiz, the latter not providing enough flexibility for our required use cases.
This package does not handle serialization of object representations. The most common use case is to produce a JSON string from a representation and this is easily done with a single call to JSON.stringify(). It would be fairly straightforward to add support for serializers (including XML). We welcome pull requests.
Let’s use the Mongoose Blog Schema definition as an example:

Let’s define a representation that formats blog objects for API consumption. Only fields specifically defined in a template will be rendered. In addition, you can provide a value formatter function to manipulate values prior to their inclusion in the serialized response:

Templates are registered using the define
method. You must provide a name for the template and an array of field definitions.
Simple template inheritence is allowed by passing an options hash including a key of extends and a value which is the name of a previously defined template:

If a field is redefined in an extension template, the most inherited version of the field will be used.
Field definitions are defined using the Field factory provided when requiring jiggler. In all examples we have referenced this factory as J.Field
.
Fields require a name and a variety of options may also be specified to control representation output including attaching virtual properties and formatted properties:
