chef-handler-elapsed-time

A chef handler that reports on per-resource elasped times in a simple graphical form.

Requirements

Only works on Chef >= 10.14

Usage

Use the chef_handler cookbook by Opscode. Create a recipe with the following:

include_recipe "chef_handler"

# Install `chef-handler-elapsed-time` gem during the compile phase
chef_gem "chef-handler-elapsed-time"

# load the gem here so it gets added to the $LOAD_PATH, otherwise chef_handler
# will fail.
require 'chef/handler/elapsed_time'

# Activate the handler immediately during compile phase
chef_handler "Chef::Handler::ElapsedTime" do
  source "chef/handler/elapsed_time"
  action :nothing
end.run_action(:enable)

Options

You can pass an argument of max_width to the handler to define the maximum width the bar can be in order to fit onto your screen if required.

Example:

chef_handler "Chef::Handler::ElapsedTime" do
  source "chef/handler/elapsed_time"
  action :nothing
  arguments :max_width => 10  # narrow bar
end.run_action(:enable)

Example output

$ chef-client
