List Of Baby Names

A list of baby names given to tiny humans in Ruby. Based on data from:

  • Behind the Name (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license)
  • Hadley (Distribution of US baby names, 1880-2008) (Public Domain)
  • South Australia (2016) (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International)
  • Queensland (2006-2016) (Creative Commons Attribution 3.0)

This gem was extracted from Namestork. Namestork brings 9 names to you and your partner's inbox once a day at a time of your choosing. If you're looking to find the perfect name for your baby consider trying it.

Installation

Add this line to your application's Gemfile:

gem 'list_of_baby_names'

And then execute:

$ bundle

Or install it yourself as:

$ gem install list_of_baby_names

Usage

Get the first name from the Hadley data set:

hadley = ListOfBabyNames.hadley
hadley.size # => 258000

last = hadley.last
last.name # => "Sloane"
last.gender # => :female
last.year # => 2008
last.position # => 1000

Get "Addison" from the Behind the Name data set (Note: ranking is unsupported in this data set so -1 is returned for #year and #position):

behindthename = ListOfBabyNames.behindthename
behindthename.size # => 23355

addison = behindthename.find { |name| name.name == "Addison" }
addison.gender # => :unisex
addison.year # => -1
addison.position # => -1

Get the list of data sets:

ListOfBabyNames.data_sets # => [:behindthename, :hadley, :south_australia, :queensland]

Development

After checking out the repo, run bin/setup to install dependencies. Then, run rake spec to run the tests. You can also run bin/console for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.

To install this gem onto your local machine, run bundle exec rake install. To release a new version, update the version number in version.rb, and then run bundle exec rake release, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and tags, and push the .gem file to rubygems.org.

Scripts

Scripts for transforming data sets into the common format are in script. These scripts are super hacky and mostly for my convenience.
