Hiring Philosophy

Every hire shapes what Socket becomes

Hiring is the most consequential decision we make. Every person we bring in shifts our culture, our velocity, and our ability to secure the software supply chain.

Talent Density

We're a startup competing against much larger companies. Our edge comes from talent density. When everyone on the team is exceptional, we can move faster, take bigger swings, and solve harder problems than teams ten times our size.

Great teams compound. One exceptional engineer doesn't just ship great code, they raise the bar for everyone around them. An exceptional salesperson doesn't just close deals, they shape how we think about customer challenges and influence where the product goes next.

The traits that show up in successful hires:

  • Agency. We look for people who take ownership and make decisions without needing permission. The people who thrive here see problems and solve them rather than waiting to be told what to do.
  • Slope. We care deeply about trajectory. We're looking for people who are continuously learning, improving, and growing in their craft. High slope often matters more than where you're starting from.
  • Urgency. We need people who move fast. The best people we've hired understand that speed matters and have a bias towards action over endless deliberation.
  • Curiosity. We value people who ask questions, dig deeper, and genuinely want to understand how things work. Curiosity drives better solutions and keeps us innovating.
  • Craft. We're looking for people who care deeply about the quality of their work. Whether it's code, design, sales, or operations, excellence in execution matters.
  • Low ego. The best people we've hired are confident but humble. They take feedback well, let the best idea win regardless of who suggests it, and focus on making the team better rather than being right.

Interview Milestones

Informational & Discovery: You'll start with a conversation with someone from our Talent Team. We want to understand your background, what you're excited about, and whether Socket could be a great next chapter for you. If there's a strong fit, you'll meet with the team lead for a deeper dive into your skills and experience.

Panel Interviews: This is where we go deep. You'll work through a technical assessment and meet with the people you'd be working alongside. Think of it less as a test and more as a preview of the work. We want to see how you approach real problems. The talent team will always tell you what to expect ahead of time.

Debrief: After your panel interviews, our team gets together to share observations. We look at your strengths, where you might grow into the role, and how everything stacks up against what we need. Multiple perspectives matter - it keeps us honest and consistent.

CEO & Founder Interview: We're still in evaluation mode - and so are you. This is your chance to hear directly from our Founder about where Socket is headed and decide if this is the right place for you to do your best work. Come with questions.

Reference Checks: We take references seriously. Not as a box to check, but as a real signal. We want to understand how you work, what makes you great, and what environment you need to do your best work. We feel a deep responsibility to make sure this is a place you can genuinely flourish. Everyone deserves a workplace where they can grow, do their best work, and succeed.

Final Decision: By this point, we've both put in real time and energy, and we hope we're moving forward together. If we decide not to, it means we're not confident this is the right environment for you to do your best work - not a reflection of your talent. That decision can come from any part of the process: interviews, a presentation, references, or the debrief. Either way, we'll always aim to share context so you understand the decision.

Our Commitment

Move thoughtfully. Most of our processes take 3-4 weeks (if there's a delay, we'll make sure you're in the know), balancing respect for your time with the need to get this decision right. We'd rather take longer to find the right person than rush into a decision that doesn't work out for either of us.

Honesty about fit. Many candidates we talk to are talented and accomplished. But talent alone doesn't guarantee fit. We're evaluating whether your skills translate to what Socket needs right now and whether our environment is one where you'll flourish. If it's not a fit at the end of the day, we'll make sure to close the loop as soon as possible.
