Introducing Socket Scanning for VS Code Marketplace Extensions
Socket now scans VS Code extensions, giving teams early detection of risky behaviors, hidden capabilities, and supply chain threats in developer tools.

Security Token Service
Amazon Web Services provides Security Token Service (STS) as a web service that enables you to request temporary, limited-privilege credentials for users. This guide describes the STS API. For more information, see Temporary Security Credentials in the IAM User Guide.
As an alternative to using the API, you can use one of the Amazon Web Services SDKs, which consist of libraries and sample code for various programming languages and platforms such as Java, Ruby, .NET, iOS, Android, and others. The SDKs provide a convenient way to create programmatic access to STS. For example, the SDKs can cryptographically sign requests, manage errors, and retry requests automatically. For information about the Amazon Web Services SDKs, see Tools to Build on Amazon Web Services.
For information about setting up signatures and authorization through the API, see Signing Amazon Web Services API Requests in the Amazon Web Services General Reference. For general information about the Query API, see Making Query Requests in the IAM User Guide. For information about using security tokens with other Amazon Web Services products, see Amazon Web Services Services That Work with IAM in the IAM User Guide.
For information about STS endpoints, see STS Regions and endpoints in the IAM User Guide. For information about logging STS API calls, see Logging IAM and STS API calls with CloudTrail in the IAM User Guide.
To install this package, use the CLI of your favorite package manager:
npm install @aws-sdk/client-stsyarn add @aws-sdk/client-stspnpm add @aws-sdk/client-stsThe AWS SDK is modulized by clients and commands.
To send a request, you only need to import the STSClient and
the commands you need, for example GetCallerIdentityCommand:
// ES5 example
const { STSClient, GetCallerIdentityCommand } = require("@aws-sdk/client-sts");
// ES6+ example
import { STSClient, GetCallerIdentityCommand } from "@aws-sdk/client-sts";
To send a request:
send operation on the client, providing the command object as input.const client = new STSClient({ region: "REGION" });
const params = { /** input parameters */ };
const command = new GetCallerIdentityCommand(params);
We recommend using the await operator to wait for the promise returned by send operation as follows:
// async/await.
try {
const data = await client.send(command);
// process data.
} catch (error) {
// error handling.
} finally {
// finally.
}
You can also use Promise chaining.
client
.send(command)
.then((data) => {
// process data.
})
.catch((error) => {
// error handling.
})
.finally(() => {
// finally.
});
The aggregated client class is exported from the same package, but without the "Client" suffix.
STS extends STSClient and additionally supports all operations, waiters, and paginators as methods.
This style may be familiar to you from the AWS SDK for JavaScript v2.
If you are bundling the AWS SDK, we recommend using only the bare-bones client (STSClient).
More details are in the blog post on
modular packages in AWS SDK for JavaScript.
import { STS } from "@aws-sdk/client-sts";
const client = new STS({ region: "REGION" });
// async/await.
try {
const data = await client.getCallerIdentity(params);
// process data.
} catch (error) {
// error handling.
}
// Promises.
client
.getCallerIdentity(params)
.then((data) => {
// process data.
})
.catch((error) => {
// error handling.
});
// callbacks (not recommended).
client.getCallerIdentity(params, (err, data) => {
// process err and data.
});
When the service returns an exception, the error will include the exception information, as well as response metadata (e.g. request id).
try {
const data = await client.send(command);
// process data.
} catch (error) {
const { requestId, cfId, extendedRequestId } = error.$metadata;
console.log({ requestId, cfId, extendedRequestId });
/**
* The keys within exceptions are also parsed.
* You can access them by specifying exception names:
* if (error.name === 'SomeServiceException') {
* const value = error.specialKeyInException;
* }
*/
}

This client code is generated automatically. Any modifications will be overwritten the next time the @aws-sdk/client-sts package is updated.
To contribute to client you can check our generate clients scripts.
This SDK is distributed under the Apache License, Version 2.0, see LICENSE for more information.
The 'aws-sdk' package is the older version of the AWS SDK for JavaScript. It includes the STS service client as well, but it is not modular like the '@aws-sdk/client-sts' package. The 'aws-sdk' package includes all AWS services in one large bundle, which can result in larger bundle sizes for front-end projects.
The 'aws-amplify' package is a library designed to help developers build cloud-enabled applications with AWS. While it provides higher-level abstractions for authentication and authorization, it also allows for direct interaction with AWS services, including STS, through the Auth module. It is more opinionated and integrates with other AWS Amplify features.
