Flightdeck — Multi-Agent Orchestration Platform

npm

[!WARNING] This is purely AI generated code. Use the project with this understanding in mind.

One command. A whole engineering crew.

Flightdeck orchestrates crews of AI coding agents through a real-time web UI — each with a specialized role, its own context window, and the ability to collaborate through structured messaging. It supports multiple providers including GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Google Gemini CLI, Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode. Give it a task, and a Project Lead agent breaks it down, assembles developers, architects, reviewers, and more, then coordinates their work in parallel while you stay in the loop.

npm install -g @flightdeck-ai/flightdeck
flightdeck

Instead of one AI agent doing everything sequentially, Flightdeck runs multiple agents at the same time — a developer writes code while a reviewer checks it, an architect designs the system, and a secretary tracks progress. The result: faster delivery, higher quality, and built-in checks and balances.

Quick Start

npm install -g @flightdeck-ai/flightdeck
flightdeck

That's it. This installs Flightdeck globally and starts the server, opening the dashboard in your browser.

What Happens Next

  • Create a project — Click Create Project, describe what you want built, and point it at your repo
  • Watch the lead plan — The Project Lead agent analyzes your task, breaks it into a task DAG, and assembles a crew
  • Agents get to work — Developers, reviewers, architects spin up in parallel — each in their own CLI session with your configured provider
  • Stay in the loop — Message any agent directly, approve decisions, and watch progress in real time

Example: "Refactor the auth module to use JWT tokens, add tests, and update the docs" → The lead creates a developer (implementation), a code reviewer (quality), and a tech writer (docs), sets up dependencies so the reviewer waits for the developer, and coordinates the whole flow.

CLI options: --port=4000 · --host=0.0.0.0 · --no-browser · -v / --version · -h / --help

Local development setup
npm install
npm run build
npm start

For development with hot reload:

npm run dev
  • Server: http://localhost:3001
  • Web UI: http://localhost:5173 (dev) or http://localhost:3001 (production)

Features

🎯 Crew Orchestration

  • Project Lead — Breaks down tasks, assembles a crew, creates a task DAG, delegates work, and synthesizes results
  • Sub-Lead Delegation — Architects can also create agents and delegate tasks, enabling hierarchical crew structures
  • 13 Specialized Roles — Purpose-built agents with distinct system prompts and model diversity (see Agent Roles)
  • Task DAG — Declarative task scheduling with dependencies; auto-links agents via DELEGATE/CREATE_AGENT
  • Human-in-the-Loop — Message any agent directly; queue, reorder, or remove messages before delivery
  • System Pause/Resume — Halt all message delivery system-wide; agents hold position until resumed

💬 Communication

  • Direct Messaging — Agents send structured messages to each other by ID
  • @Mentions — Type @ in chat to autocomplete agent names; mentioned agents receive the message
  • Group Chat — Create groups by member ID or role; auto-created when 3+ agents work on the same feature; auto-archived when all members finish
  • Broadcasts — Send a message to every active agent at once
  • Telegram Integration — Receive notifications via Telegram bot with batched delivery, challenge-response auth, and configurable settings

📈 Visualization & Monitoring

  • Home Dashboard — At-a-glance view of active projects, decisions made, decisions needing approval, action-required items, and progress milestones. Onboarding guide when no projects exist
  • AttentionBar — Persistent system-wide status bar with 3 escalation states (green/yellow/red). WebSocket push for <3s latency. Adjusts sensitivity based on Trust Dial level
  • Kanban Board — Interactive task board with drag-and-drop (via @dnd-kit), context menus, scope switcher (global/per-project), add-task form, filters, pagination, and soft-delete with archive/restore
  • Project Design Tab — File browser with Markdown preview for project documentation
  • Overview Dashboard — Cumulative flow diagram, milestone timeline (progress events only), agent heatmap, token usage curve, and progress indicators with unified project tabs
  • Mission Control — Single-screen project overview with 8 configurable drag-and-drop panels: health summary, agent fleet, token economics, alerts, activity feed, DAG minimap, comm heatmap, and performance scorecards
  • Timeline — Swim-lane Gantt chart with decoupled vertical/horizontal scroll, Ctrl+wheel zoom, keyboard navigation, drag-to-pan, horizontal overflow for 10+ agents, and sticky Session Replay scrubber (4× default speed)
  • DAG / Gantt Chart — Scrollable, zoomable task Gantt chart with local timezone display
  • Token Economics — Per-agent token breakdown with estimation fallback (~4 chars/token from output preview), shown with ~ prefix and (est.) suffix
  • Chat — Virtual scrolling with react-virtuoso, pinned user message banner, grouped sequential messages, per-project group chat history
  • Catch-Up Banner — "While you were away" slide-down summary of tasks completed, decisions pending, and failures
  • Historical Data — All pages load from REST API when no live agents are present — no empty states for existing projects

🧭 Navigation

  • Breadcrumbs — Contextual navigation trail showing current location within the project hierarchy
  • Recent Projects — Quick-access list in sidebar with one-click navigation
  • Keyboard Shortcuts — Alt+1–5 to switch between project tabs
  • Tab Persistence — Active tab saved per project in localStorage; restored on return
  • Page Transitions — Smooth animations between pages; respects prefers-reduced-motion
  • Mobile Layout — Touch-scrollable tabs for narrow viewports

✅ Decision & Progress Tracking

  • Decision Log — Track architectural decisions with accept/reject actions and reason comments; grouped by project with project names (not IDs); optimistic UI updates
  • PROGRESS/DAG Consolidation — A single PROGRESS command auto-reads DAG state, eliminating the need for separate queries
  • Global Search — Search across messages, tasks, decisions, and activity

🔒 Coordination & Safety

  • File Locking — Pessimistic locks with TTL and glob support prevent concurrent edits
  • Scoped COMMIT — git add only on files the agent has locked, then post-commit verification. Prevents git add -A from leaking other agents' work.
  • Trust Dial — 3-level oversight (Detailed / Standard / Minimal) controls notification volume, card density, and escalation thresholds. Per-project overrides supported
  • Event Pipeline — Reactive handlers auto-trigger actions (e.g., run tests after commits, log summaries on task completion)
  • Agent Controls — Interrupt, terminate, restart agents; change models on the fly
  • Security — Challenge-response auth, prompt injection sanitization (4-layer), default-deny allowlists, secret redaction, CORS lockdown, rate limiting, archived-only project deletion, CWD path validation

💾 Persistence & Recovery

  • Session Resume — Resume from a previous session ID with full context recovery. Native SDK resume for providers that support it (Claude, Copilot)
  • Knowledge Pipeline — Automatic knowledge injection on agent spawn (KnowledgeInjector), session knowledge extraction on agent exit, SkillsLoader for .github/skills/ with hot-reload via fs.watch, and AgentReconciliation on reconnect
  • CollectiveMemory — Cross-session remember() / recall() for persistent agent knowledge
  • Persistent Projects — Projects survive across sessions; chat history and state auto-load on startup
  • Context Re-injection — Automatic crew context recovery after context window compaction
  • Data Retention — Data management in Settings with storage stats and cleanup by age (7d/30d/90d/all)

Architecture

Flightdeck uses a three-tier architecture with clear separation of concerns:

How the tiers interact

  • Client ↔ Orchestration Server — The React frontend communicates with the Express server via REST endpoints (43 route modules covering agents, projects, sessions, tasks, decisions, knowledge, etc.) and a persistent WebSocket connection on /ws for real-time updates. WebSocket events are batched and throttled (agent text flushed every 100ms).

  • Orchestration Server ↔ Agent Server — The orchestration server forks the agent server as a detached child process, communicating via stdio and monitoring health with heartbeat pings. The agent server manages individual CLI agent processes (Copilot, Claude, Gemini, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode) through the ACP (Agent Client Protocol) — each agent runs as a separate subprocess with its own context window and role.

  • Command flow — Agents emit structured commands (wrapped in doubled Unicode brackets) in their output stream. The CommandDispatcher parses these and routes them to 10 domain-specific command modules (AgentCommands, TaskCommands, CommCommands, etc.). The GovernancePipeline intercepts commands through ordered hooks: security → permission → validation → rate-limit → policy → approval, with post-hooks for audit and metrics.

AI-Aware Estimation: Traditional human timelines don't apply. A crew of AI agents can compress weeks of work into hours. Plan in sessions (30 min – 2 hours), not sprints. See the agent-collaboration-patterns skill for calibration data.

ACP Command Reference

Agents communicate via structured commands wrapped in doubled Unicode brackets (⟦⟦ COMMAND {...} ⟧⟧, U+27E6/U+27E7) detected in their output stream. Commands are parsed by the CommandDispatcher and routed to the appropriate subsystem.
