Google Cloud Speech API: Node.js Client

release level CircleCI AppVeyor codecov

Node.js idiomatic client for Speech API.

The Cloud Speech API enables easy integration of Google speech recognition technologies into developer applications. Send audio and receive a text transcription from the Cloud Speech API service.

Read more about the client libraries for Cloud APIs, including the older Google APIs Client Libraries, in Client Libraries Explained.

Installing the client library

npm install --save @google-cloud/speech

Using the client library

// Imports the Google Cloud client library
const speech = require('@google-cloud/speech');
const fs = require('fs');

// Creates a client
const client = new speech.SpeechClient();

// The name of the audio file to transcribe
const fileName = './resources/audio.raw';

// Reads a local audio file and converts it to base64
const file = fs.readFileSync(fileName);
const audioBytes = file.toString('base64');

// The audio file's encoding, sample rate in hertz, and BCP-47 language code
const audio = {
  content: audioBytes,
};
const config = {
  encoding: 'LINEAR16',
  sampleRateHertz: 16000,
  languageCode: 'en-US',
};
const request = {
  audio: audio,
  config: config,
};

// Detects speech in the audio file
client
  .recognize(request)
  .then(data => {
    const response = data[0];
    const transcription = response.results
      .map(result => result.alternatives[0].transcript)
      .join('\n');
    console.log(`Transcription: ${transcription}`);
  })
  .catch(err => {
    console.error('ERROR:', err);
  });

Versioning

This library follows Semantic Versioning.

This library is considered to be General Availability (GA). This means it is stable; the code surface will not change in backwards-incompatible ways unless absolutely necessary (e.g. because of critical security issues) or with an extensive deprecation period. Issues and requests against GA libraries are addressed with the highest priority.
