Prerequisites

To start using Soya Next, you need to be familiar with the following:

  • Express.js - Fast, unopinionated, minimalist web framework for Node.js
  • React - A javascript library for building user interfaces
  • Next.js - A minimalistic framework for server-rendered React applications

And optionally:

  • Redux - Predictable state container for JavaScript apps

Quick Start Guide

This is a quick start to help you bootstrap soya-next project in no time. It should cover everything in the getting started section.

npm install -g soya-next-cli

soya-next-cli app-name
cd app-name
npm start

You are done! Open http://localhost:3000 in your browser to see your app running.

Getting Started

Installation

Soya Next requires Express.js, Next.js, React, React-Cookie, React-Redux, and Redux to be installed, run the following to install them:

npm install --save express next.js react react-cookie react-dom react-redux redux

To install Soya Next, run the following:

npm install --save soya-next
Configuration

In your project root directory, create next.config.js with the following:

const { createNextConfig } = require('soya-next');

module.exports = createNextConfig();

This will configure your app to support CSS modules, SASS, image import, and global app configuration.

Build your app

In your project root directory, create server.js with the following:

const express = require('express');
const next = require('next');
const dev = process.env.NODE_ENV !== 'production';
const app = next({ dev });
const { createRouter } = require('soya-next/server/router');

app.prepare()
  .then(() => {
    const server = express();
    server.use(createRouter(app));
    server.listen(3000, err => {
      if (err) {
        throw err;
      }
      console.log('> Ready on http://localhost:3000');
    });
  })
  .catch(ex => {

Then, create a directory called pages and add index.js as a sample page into it with the following:

export default createPage()(IndexPage);

That's it! To start your app run the following:

node server.js

To use npm start or yarn start instead, add the following to your package.json:

Open http://localhost:3000 in your browser.

API

applyReducers([reducers])

Register reducers to be loaded dynamically so you won't need to worry about it anymore.

Arguments
  • [reducers] (Object): An object of reducers which will be loaded dynamically with the given name.

    Note: Make sure each reducers has unique name within your application reducers.

Returns

(Function): A higher order React component class.

createDocument()

Collects and hydrates all CSS Modules which have already been injected into pages by styled-modules.

Returns

(Document): Custom <Document /> which performs server side rendering.

createNextConfig([nextConfig])

Configures your app to support CSS Modules, SASS, image import, and global app configuration. To customize your own configuration, please read here.

Arguments
  • [nextConfig] (Object): An object of next configuration with the following properties:
    • [assetPrefix] (String): Asset prefix for CDN usage. See here for details.
    • [distDir] (String): Build directory, default is .next. See here for details.
    • [webpack] (Function(config, { dev })): Webpack config. See here for details.
    • [webpackDevMiddleware] (Function(config)): Webpack dev middleware. See here for details.
Returns

(Object): An enhanced object of next configuration.

createPage([...connectArgs])(Page, [reducers])

Configures and connects to Redux store, loads reducers dynamically, handles client side URL redirection, and makes cookie, default locale, locale, site locales, and url available as Page props and in the getInitialProps lifecycle method.

It will also make them available to the component hierarchy below, through the following method calls:

  • Cookie through withCookies() calls, imported from react-cookie.
  • Locale, default locale, and site locales through withLocale() calls, imported from soya-next/i18n.
  • Url through withUrl() calls, imported from soya-next/router.
Arguments
  • [...connectArgs] (Connect Arguments)
  • Page (ReactComponent): Page component to be enhanced.
  • [reducers] (Object): An object of reducers which will be loaded dynamically with the given name.

    Note: Make sure each reducers has unique name within your application reducers.

Returns

(ReactComponent): An enhanced Page component class.

createRouter(app, [options])

Creates locale aware express router with universal cookie and gzip enabled (production only).

Arguments
  • app (Next Server)
  • [options] (Object):
    • [routes] (Object.<Object>): An object which key is a route path and value is an object with the following properties:
      • page (String): Path to page component.
      • [method] (String): HTTP method, default is GET.
    • [redirects] (Object.<Object>): An object which key is a redirection source path and value is an object with the following properties:
      • to (String): Redirection target path.
      • [method] (String): HTTP method, default is GET.
      • [status] (Number): HTTP status code for redirection, default is 301.
    • [compression] (Object): See here for compression options.
    • [defaultLocale] (String): A locale string used as fallback locale, e.g. id-id, en-id, etc.
    • [siteLocales] (Array.<String>): An array of locale string supported by your app.
Returns

(Express.Router): An object of express router.

withLocale()

Give access to default locale, locale, and site locales.

Returns

(Function): A higher order React component class that passes defaultLocale, locale, and siteLocales into your component props.
