What is @astrojs/tailwind?
@astrojs/tailwind is an integration package for Astro that allows you to easily set up and use Tailwind CSS in your Astro projects. It simplifies the process of configuring Tailwind CSS with Astro, enabling you to quickly start styling your components with Tailwind's utility-first CSS framework.
What are @astrojs/tailwind's main functionalities?
Setup Tailwind CSS
This command installs the @astrojs/tailwind package along with Tailwind CSS, setting up the necessary dependencies for using Tailwind in your Astro project.
npm install @astrojs/tailwind tailwindcss
Add Tailwind Integration
This code snippet shows how to add the Tailwind integration to your Astro configuration file. By including `tailwind()` in the `integrations` array, you enable Tailwind CSS in your Astro project.
import { defineConfig } from 'astro/config';
import tailwind from '@astrojs/tailwind';
export default defineConfig({
integrations: [tailwind()]
});
Configure Tailwind
This is a basic Tailwind CSS configuration file (`tailwind.config.js`). It specifies the paths to all of your template files so Tailwind can tree-shake unused styles in production.
module.exports = {
content: ['./src/**/*.{astro,html,js,jsx,ts,tsx}'],
theme: {
extend: {},
},
plugins: [],
};
Other packages similar to @astrojs/tailwind
tailwindcss
The core Tailwind CSS package. It provides the utility-first CSS framework that you can use in any project, not just Astro. You need to manually configure it with your build tools.
postcss
PostCSS is a tool for transforming CSS with JavaScript plugins. Tailwind CSS itself is a PostCSS plugin. You can use PostCSS to add other plugins for additional functionality, but it requires more manual setup compared to @astrojs/tailwind.
vite-plugin-windicss
A Vite plugin for integrating Windi CSS, which is a utility-first CSS framework similar to Tailwind CSS. It offers faster build times and a similar feature set, but is not specifically tailored for Astro.
@astrojs/tailwind 💨
This Astro integration brings Tailwind CSS to your Astro project.
Tailwind brings utility CSS classes for fonts, colors, layouts, transforms, and more to every Astro page or UI component in your project. It also includes extensive theming options for unifying your styles.
Installation
There are two ways to add integrations to your project. Let's try the most convenient option first!
(experimental) astro add
command
Astro includes a CLI tool for adding first party integrations: astro add
. This command will:
- (Optionally) Install all necessary dependencies and peer dependencies
- (Also optionally) Update your
astro.config.*
file to apply this integration
To install @astrojs/tailwind
, run the following from your project directory and follow the prompts:
npx astro add tailwind
yarn astro add tailwind
pnpx astro add tailwind
If you run into any hiccups, feel free to log an issue on our GitHub and try the manual installation steps below.
Install dependencies manually
First, install the @astrojs/tailwind
integration like so:
npm install @astrojs/tailwind
Then, apply this integration to your astro.config.*
file using the integrations
property:
astro.config.mjs
import tailwind from '@astrojs/tailwind';
export default {
integrations: [tailwind()],
}
Getting started
Tailwind's utility classes should be ready-to-use with zero config, including preprocessor setup and production optimization. Head to the Tailwind docs to learn all of the options and features available!
Configuration
Custom Tailwind Config File
Add your own tailwind.config.(js|cjs|mjs)
file to the base of your project, and this integration will respect it. This can be useful for setting a custom theme or providing other configuration?
config.path
You can give a different config file location using this integration's config.path
option. If config.path
is relative, it will be resolved relative to the root.
Changing config.path
is well supported in Astro, but not recommended overall since it can cause problems with other Tailwind integrations, like the official Tailwind VSCode extension.
import tailwind from '@astrojs/tailwind';
export default {
integrations: [tailwind({
config: { path: './custom-config.js' },
})],
}
config.applyBaseStyles
By default, the integration imports a basic base.css
file on every page of your project. This basic CSS file includes the three main @tailwind
directives:
@tailwind base;
@tailwind components;
@tailwind utilities;
To disable this default behavior, set config.applyBaseStyles
to false
. This can be useful if you need to define your own base.css
file (to include a @layer
directive, for example). This can also be useful if you do not want base.css
to be imported on every page of your project.
export default {
integrations: [tailwind({
config: { applyBaseStyles: false },
})],
}
